Hounds
Retired racing greyhounds available for adoption through Greyhound Crossroads in Upstate South Carolina.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO OUR ADOPTERS!
We are currently doing adoptions on a limited basis, in the Upstate Area of South Carolina, due to the shortage of greyhounds. Most of the tracks closed across the country in 2020, but we have gotten a few dogs from Australia and the two remaining tracks in West Virginia. Please fill out this form so we have your current info and can add you to our list of people interested in greyhound adoption.
If you are a new adopter and are in our adoption area of Upstate SC, please fill out the form below. You will be contacted to complete the approval process, with a home visit, IF we have a greyhound available that will work for your home. If you are already an approved adopter and have adopted from us before, please fill out the form below, so we have your current info and can start looking for a dog that suits your needs.
Greyhound Crossroads Adoption Requests
You will be contacted if we have a greyhound that will be a good match. That may take awhile. We suggest making an adoption donation of $450 WHEN you get your greyhound to help us cover its' medical and transport expenses. We never charge a fee to apply.
Finley raced at Derby Lane until May of 2020. He raced 30 races at the lowest D level and only managed to win 2 races, so was retired young. He was initially in a home until his first owner passed away. He has been in another adoptive home since 2021. We have been asked to help rehome him because they can no longer care for him. He has lived in his former home with a female greyhound, but we have been told he doesn't do well with other male dogs. So he will need a home with no other dogs or only female dogs. Finley is the son of the famous Flying Hydrogen and his dam is Backwood Geewhiz. He raced at 77 lbs and his birthday is April 28th of 2018 so he is 6.5 years old. He is good with small female dogs, cats and kids. More as we get to know him |

Idol is a return from a Gainsville FL greyhound adoption group that is no longer in business. He only had 2 schooling races at the Flagler Race Track in June of 2012. He finished so far behind everyone else that he wasn't even on camera. He was sent to Dubuque to try a different track and has one more schooling race in November of 2012. Again he finished last, so he was officially retired. At some point he was sent back to Florida and was placed in an adoptive home there, at the end of 2012 or the beginning of 2013. He has been in that home until now. He is being returned because his owners are being relocated due to work. They haven't been able to find a place to live that will accept large dogs. Idol is an older guy that turned 11 January 9th so qualifies for our senior discount of a $250 adoption donation. He raced at 74lbs. His sire is the famous Maryville Rumble and his dam is Grey's Paper Doll. He currently lives with an elderly dog and 3 year old twins. He is great with the toddlers and lets them play on and around him. He has also lived with cats and is great with them. Idol barks when he needs to go outside to go potty. He is a very calm, laid back, guy that loves everyone. He likes to be nearby but isn't needy. Idol travels well, he is not on any medications other than heart worm prevention. He likes walks and is excellent on leash. He has a fenced yard to play in and doesn't act his age. His only fault is that he doesn't like his crate. As perfect as he sounds, he probably wouldn't need to be crated. This is a great guy that is looking for a new home through no fault of his own. |

Harry is one of the last greyhounds coming to us from the Florida race tracks. The tracks there have been gradually shutting down over the last 2 years due to a vote to end racing in Florida by the beginning of 2021. Harry came to us from D'Arcy Kennels at Derby Lane. That track just closed on December 27th of 2020. Harry never actually had an official race at that track and was retired before his career even got started. His sire is the famous Makeshift and his dam is Shanagolden. He will turn 2 on March 13th. Since he didn't race we don't have an official race weight on him, but he is a pretty tall guy that is bigger than his two brothers that he arrived with. He weighed 72lbs but is on the thin side. As a pet Harry should probably weigh between 75 and 80lbs. Harry came in with his two littermates Irvin Irving and Reggie Woo and both of them are smaller guys that raced at just 71lbs. Harry's litter were all named for the popular Harry Bosch books and TV series. Harry did not pass his cat test. He was very interested in the cat until the cat slapped him. He wouldn't go near the cat after that, so it is possible that he could be trained with them. But he still barked and seemed excitable from a distance, even after the cat smack. We think he would do best in a home without kitties. He has been fine with a small dog in his foster home and seems to get along with the their other greyhounds as well. He is very quiet in his crate and crates nicely so he may do fine as an apartment dog. He is very friendly and happy and gets a little bouncy and playful when he comes out of the crate. He liked the children he met too. Very sweet curious guy that is busy checking out everything in the house. He gives sweet kisses. |

Rag Doll initially came in from the Sanford Orlando Race Track in June of 2019. She is a tiny girl that raced at 60lbs and raced 72 races. She started out racing at Mardi Gras briefly then was moved to Sanford Orlando to race. She was pretty good, getting up to A level for part of her career. She started slowing down, so was retired. Her sire is Kelsos Bogman and her dam is Valeri Deer. Rag Doll turned 8 on May 2nd. She is a very calm girl that passed her cat test easily with no interest in them. She was also fine with the small dog she met. She is quiet in her kennel and pretty good on leash too. She liked the kids she met. She is just a little overwhelmed by everything new but doesn't really seem to be shy and will go up to people for attention. Rag Doll had to have 11 teeth taken out at the vet so will need to have good dental care and maintenance to save the rest of her teeth. She is able to eat just fine with the her remaining teeth. Rag Doll was adopted in June of 2019 and renamed Pumpkin. UPDATE! Pumpkin is a very special little girl to GC, with a special story. Her personality takes her a bit to warm up in new situations, and the stress of being moved can make life very stressful for her initially. She expresses this by being what we might gently call a little Drama Queen. Once she relaxes, however, it's clear that she loves her humans and just has a quirky personality. This little sweetheart is currently on a short medical hold to sort out some tummy issues and settle into her foster home, but we are happy to discuss possible adoption while that happens. Contact us to hear more about her unique story and what she needs for a comfortable home in retirement. Qualifies for Special Adoption status! |

Kareuhline came in from the Lester Raines kennel at the Orange Park Race Track. She is a fawn brindle female (tan with black tiger stripes). She only raced 7 races and usually finished toward the back of the pack. She didn't win any races so she was retired. She raced at 64lbs and turned 7 on July 5th. Her sire is Legull and her dam is Cerreal. She is a really sweet, friendly girl. More as we get to know her. Updated listing! This gorgeous little girl has been in a home since she retired at 2 years old but she is looking for a new home. Her current owners tell us she is safe with cats, small dogs, and even a large bird! She will be available as soon as she arrives in Greenville and we are able to get some updated info on her. |
