Special Needs - Cushings Disease! Larry came straight from the farm to us before he was even 2 without actually making it to the race track. He and his brother just didn't show much interest in racing. Larry is a very tiny guy at just 63lbs. His sire is Iceman Brutus and his dam is WJS Raina Jem. Larry will turn 7 on Sept 19th. He has had some very bad luck and has been returned to our group twice. Larry came in with his brother Mo and was adopted with Mo by both previous owners. He was returned from his first home because he and his brother were barking at night. They were put out in an outbuilding at night and just wanted to be in the house with their family. Larry and Mo were adopted again and did fine together, unfortunately Mo passed away suddenly a in December of 2015 due to bloat. In mid 2016, Larry started acting stressed and losing weight. His owners believed he was stressed due to the loss of his brother. His family had some blood work run by their vet and found low thyroid so started him on that thyroid meds and Prozac for anxiety and sent him back to us to rehome, in hopes a home with another dog would help him.
Larry was very very thin and didn't look healthy. Our vet did further testing on him and found that his actual problem was an adrenal problem called Cushings Disease that is caused by a tumor. He was started on medication for the Cushings and the prozac was stopped. The medication made a huge change in Larry, he started feeling and acting better and gaining weight right away. He has been on the medication for awhile now and our vet retested his levels and his blood work is perfect now! Our group's bill for Larry is about $1000 so far. We welcome donations to help with his care. Click here to go to our donation page. Larry will have at least two medications that he will have to take the rest of his life. Those medications will cost our group or his adoptive family about $100 a month. We don't know how fast the tumor will grow, but Larry is likely to only be with us another year or two.
We are hopeful that we will find a very special adopter for Larry that will be able to afford his long term care. Other than his health issues, Larry, appears to be the perfect greyhound. He passed his cat and small dog tests and lived with both in previous homes. He would even snuggle on the bed with his cat buddy in his last home. His current foster home also has cats. Larry is a sweet, friendly, loving guy that can be silly but is very calm and perfectly behaved in his foster home. This tiny boy has the cutest little puppy face too! Larry potties nicely on leash and walks perfectly on leash, so doesn't require a home with a fenced yard, if his family is willing to leash walk him. Larry loves to snuggle and be as close to his humans as he can get. He does get worried by Thunderstorms. We were told that Larry couldn't be crated, but he has been fine being crated at his foster home within sight of other dogs. Larry seems to have bad dreams and will wake up crying sometimes, so appears to be a very sensitive guy. A generous donor has offered to pay most of Larry's adoption fee for whoever adopts him. Another generous donor is paying for Larry's first year of medication.
