Special Needs! Eight just arrived from a farm in Florida. His sire is Irish - Definate Opinion and his dam is Drop Top. Eight is a very small guy at just 65lbs. He failed out of racing training so never completed the registration process and never got a registered name. He is very young and won't even turn 2 until May 25th. After we got him into a new environment, we discovered that he was feeling and sniffing his way along and appeared to have very limited vision. So the reason he didn't chase the lure was because he couldn't see it. Our vet checked Eight's eyes and found he can see light and dark but definitely has very limited vision. Our vet was not able to make a definitive diagnosis with the equipment she had. Eight's eyes are clear and look fine. They don't bother him or cause him any pain. Our vet said this isn't likely to be something that can be reversed. Eight gets around amazingly well once he learns his surroundings. His lack of eyesight is most noticeable when he is in an unfamiliar place. Dogs have such sensitive noses and use them so much that they are able to smell their way around their environment very quickly.  Eight is doing great in foster care and is turning into a snuggler that wants affection. In just a few days he got comfortable enough in the house to play with toys. He passed his cat and small dog tests easily and is living with both in his foster home. He was appropriate with the toddlers he met and greeted them calmly and didn't shy away but didn't seek them out either. Eight also had to have both of his lower canines removed at our vet because they were not aligned right and were poking into his gums causing pain. He is on soft food now but he will be able to eat regular dog food after his mouth heals up. Eight has the most beautiful glossy coat and is a real stunner and so sweet.
