Chablis's Adoption Day photo-- the first one we ever took!  Chablis went home on December 22, 1997.

Happy 12th Birthday, Chablis!  December 28. 1997

Chablis was the mother of our dogs Angel, Stubby, and Sunshine.  This photo was taken at their reunion during the PlayGroup we used to have in Greenville.

Elizabeth's Senior Picture, taken May 1998.  She refused to take her pictures until they found a photographer that would include Chablis.  :-)

Chablis was the mother of our three littermates, 11 years old, and in VERY poor health when she arrived on December 2, 1997.  We weren't really trying to 'do an adoption' at that point.....we just knew that we had the rare opportunity to know our dogs' mother and that we wanted her to have a home for her 12th birthday.  For many reasons we didn't feel we could keep a fourth dog so we set out to find a way to save her physically and find her a home too.  There really weren't adoption groups in our area yet, so we were basically on our own with the help of Jo, the lady who brought us the dogs from Florida.

Dr. Pettay, our vet at Clinton Animal Hospital before Dr. Dixon, was able to save her after some very extensive surgery.  He also knew of a family who had been thinking about finding a greyhound.  They had just lost their home in a fire which sadly also claimed their dog, found trying to hide in their daughter's bed.  All Elizabeth wanted to help heal her heart was another canine companion.  We were concerned because of how old and relatively frail Chablis was, but the two of them had another plan in mind.  The minute they met, everyone watching could SEE the connection between the two of them.  It was truly one of the most remarkable, moving, priviledged moments of my life, and one that I will never forget.  Elizabeth was convinced that Chablis was meant to be hers, and Chablis acted as if she'd been waiting for Elizabeth her entire long life.  At that moment, Robert and I knew that somehow, we were going to form an adoption group.

Chablis had almost two years with Elizabeth before crossing the Bridge.

She was part of the inspiration to forming Greyhound Crossroads, and her legacy will live on forever.

Thank you Liz, and Chablis, for everything you brought us through your inspiration and love for each other!  Kim Owens, GC Director

Small trivia note:  Dr. Pettay's surgery assistant at that time was none other than my sister Paula!  She has gone on to become a vet as well, and is currently practicing in Greenwood SC.
